About Gerard F Hurley, CAE
Mr. Hurley became President of the Washington area based Association Executive Resources Group in 1994, a firm specializing in executive search and governance consulting for non-profit trade and professional organizations and a spectrum of other non-profits.
He started in the association management profession in 1963; during the next thirty years he served for 19 years as the chief staff executive of the National Club Association, where he worked with the volunteer directors and professional chief staff executives of 1,000 of the nation's leading golf, city and yacht clubs. Prior to NCA he spent ten years ('64-'74) with the National Spa and Pool Institute, completing his tenure as General Manager.
Mr. Hurley is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and a former director of its Foundation; he was certified by ASAE in 1974. He is past chairman of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives and its Foundation. He served on the Association Committee of the Chamber of Commerce of the U.S. He is a past director of the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill.
He has served on numerous nonprofit boards. Mr. Hurley is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) and formerly served as a Director of its Capital Area Chapter.
Mr. Hurley has synthesized his 40+ years of non-profit governance experience into “Foundation First Governance” concepts for volunteer elected directors and CEOs now available through ecommerce (AERG.org). The materials focus on the more than 40 “foundation,” and “modus operandi” building blocks which facilitate harmonious governance.
He has written extensively for non-profit organizations such as ASAE's Association Management/Leadership and (the former) GWSAE's Executive Update, Association Trends, and NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors). He has also written articles for trade, industry and governance publications for public companies such as Directors & Boards and NACD’s Director's Monthly. He has lectured for GWSAE, ASAE, NACD, the Washington Non-Profit Legal & Tax Conference, and other non-profit conferences, and speaks to volunteer boards on effective governance.
Mr. Hurley is a native of Washington, DC. He received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Maryland.
